Can local govs expand discrimination protection to cover sexual orientation, any court cases to back this?

Can local governments create ordinances or laws to expand discrimination protection to include not only race, sex, and religion, but also sexual orientation?

Is it possible that a local county law that expands discrimination protection to homosexuality and sexual orientation is unconstitutional? Are there any cases in the Supreme Court to back this?

If anyone can provide cases to support their answer, that would be appreciated.
