Marital discrimination in the work place? |
Recently my daughter got a job with a well known department store. She was hired as a part time employee although she is always scheduled for over 38 hours a week. She always works weekends. The store employs aroud 20 people in a college town. Only older employees and married employees work on weekends. When she asked the boss why that was his response was (he's a 24 year old divorcee) that the college students need friday and saturday nights as party nights! She is newly married and would enjoy some weekends off. He told her that she is already married so why would she need those nights off and it wasnt like she was going to go to the clubs or go out drinking! (her husband nor her drink) I feel that his response was inappropriate! What do you think? She should start looking for another job. In the meantime, she could contact your state labor department and ask them on the legality of the manager's scheduling. Unfortunately there are no laws against such a thing, I have worked in places where husband and wife can not work for the same company. if the employer is beyond reasoning than she should begin looking for another job. She needs to keep in mind, in the retail sales business weekends are pretty much a requirement, but most employers will at least rotate weekends so everyone is getting at least a weekend off once in a while. If the weekend thing is a really big issue that she should look for a new career. if she is going to school she might start applying for work in the field she is studying, some employers will gladly higher a college student studying for their field of business. correct it's inappropriate. tell her to quit she can have all weekends off. as long as he does it to all people with out variance she is outta luck Better try to get another job. Every country has framed rules against such discremination, but before proceeding better equipped with another job. |
