Can you be a cop if you have a DUI on your record?

A candidate's background will be considered in its entirety. A DUI will certainly not help your boyfriend become a police officer. However, in time, your boyfriend could still become a police officer. Some things are automatic dis-qualifiers. Some departments are more tolerant of some things than others. There are many things one can do to increase his or her chances of becoming a police officer. I was asked to withdraw an application for the LA Sherriffs Dept, because I had a 21 month old DUI, and they would not take me if it was less than 24 months since my last offense. By the time 24 months passed I was on to bigger and better things, so I never re-applied.
My suggestion would be to call the Department he is interested in, and ask them.
