How long is a criminal record held on file ?

how long is a criminal record held on file for?

Never until appealed

It depends on the crime committed, some if you are a juvenile are sealed if you do not commit another crime before becoming and adult.
Other crimes can follow you for life, especially a felony that will never go away, others like I said depend on the degree of the crime, and if you have a criminal record from your past as well.

Courts never destroy records. Ever. If you want to look into sealing or expunging a conviction each state has different procedures.

forever , period.

It depends because there can be many different factors.

Your question asked about "criminal record" not a conviction. These two things are very different and require different filing requirements. Also, was there any incarceration involved (jail or prison)? Was this a traffic violation or an assault?

There are two popular types of criminal record databases:

Local Record: These are the records kept by the local police agency, state police, sheriff's office, etc. Most of these agencies have records that cannot be queried nationally and they have to be done locally. The larger and better funded the agency is, the longer the record is kept. Additionally, if there was some jail/prison time, the record will be kept for a long time.

National Crime Information Center: This system is maintained by the FBI and is accessible by any law enforcement agency. I suggest you google it and read up on it. If someone makes it in here, it鈥檚 pretty much for life.

forever
