Can my grandson collect 13 weeks of unemployment compensation?

My grandson was just recently laid off from a small construction company. He is eligible for 13 weeks of unemployment compensation. He will be signing up for the Navy in about a month or so. Can he still collect this unemployment?

The unemployment comp stops as soon as the navy starts paying him.

Yes.
He can claim unemployment while he looks for work or returns to his regular job.
If he does any work,he must claim that income when he files for the week.
He can also decline to claim unemployment benefits at any time by not filing.
If he gets into a field he likes,I suggest he consider a career in the Navy.
With 30 days annual leave (paid) and free medical and dental, you won't find that in the private sector.
If he plans his leave time right,he can carry up to 60 days leave on the books for emergency or extended leave.
I also recommend that he take mail order courses that are available after he gets out of boot camp and any schools he has to attend to continue his education (many of the courses he completes can be used as credits towards a college degree) no matter how long he stays in the Navy.
With a 20 - 30 year career,he can retire with benefits and still be young enough to work in the private sector.

Just because he signs up doesn't mean he'll ship out right then and there.

But once he's gone and on the Navy's payroll then the unemployment stops.

He's eligible as long as he is currently available for work.
