I recently applied for a new apartment complex and was told that since I made over 18,000 I was not eligible.?

I was told this was federal housing and My very low teachers salary was too much. SO can someone explain to me why they would rather give the apartment to someone who will not be able to pay for it than someone who can. And also is there at least be a sliding scale for federal housing? I mean didnt my tax dollars pay for the construction of them? I have just as much right to live there as anyone else. And isnt this a form of discrimination? I feel as though I am being discriminated against because I owe the federal government 12,000 in student loans, because I got off my butt and went to college and got a job.

The thing abou these apartments is that they are brand new and have picnic tables and a pool. The only apartments in our small town that is not federal assistance apartments are old and scummy.

You are not being discriminated against. You don't qualify for the apartment so it isn't your right to live there. Obviously the apartments were built because there was a need for housing for the low income people. Letting others in would defeat the purpose. Be glad you can afford to live somewhere other than government housing.

Depends on the type of housing. If this is for very-low income and you're not then you're not allowed in. You do not have a right to use them as a taxpayer.

Your tax dollars did NOT pay for this. You paid X number of tax dollars out of over a trillion dollars collected. All those dollars are fungible. You paid so little into the pot that you contribution to this particular project is so little to be near nothing.

Landlords can discriminate based on income and debt levels. Regardless if you owe money to the federal government.

The apartment if for low income will get filled with a bunch of immigrants. System sucks. You can't fight them so join in.

Solution:
Best way around it is to manipulate what your income appears to be. You could argue that with the debt your monthly expenses are so high that you should qualify. Also ask your employer to raise your contributions to your retirement and make the paycheck look at low as possible to qualify. They will want copies of your paycheck. Just make it so you take home less than 18k.

that's the way the gov't works! try looking for something for rent from an individual instead of an apartment complex--you might find something fairly inexpensive. good for you for getting a degree and a job--but don't get mad because the pay is low. try looking for a position in a private school or university--they pay much better. also--if you have a gov't student loan and you agree to teach in a "rural" area=----the gov't will pay the loan for you

just forget about it.. i too was in a similar spot.. all i got was the runaround..its probably full of nasty people anyways roaches n all..I called HUD.. if you want to pursue but its a waste of time

I am sure there are plenty of other apartments available.

and I hope you are not teaching logic. law, writing, math, civics, social studies, or anything else that requires critical thinking skills if this question is a fair assessment of your own skills.

also you might want o double check the amount of compassion you convey in life and especially to your students.

i suppose if you really love the apartments, go to you school and demand a reduction in pay so you can qualify. The other teachers would be glad to split whatever you put back in the pot I am sure!

Be glad you don't have to live in welfare apartments with a bunch of deadbeats that would probably rob your house when you went to work. Yes, your tax dollars pay for those gov't subsidized apartments. While it's unfair, go find a better place to live and be happy you can.

Virtually every person who graduates college and starts out in their career is exactly where you are with loans and a low-paying job. Work hard, get ahead, save, LIVE FRUGALLY, and as your career progresses you will find more and more luxury in your life. Everything will work out in the end.
