What is considered necessary to be held in a Safety File?


A construction site by St. Marys Hospital in London is in the early stages of development and will become part of the existing Hospital.

At the moment are a large number of industrial lorries which are constantly removing earth and rubble from the site over a couple of months. About 50 a day...

The principle contractor needs to keep a safety file. Can anyone please tell me what is considered necessary to be held in this safety file?

Contact the HEALTH AND SAFETY EXECUTIVE website to investigate the obligatory laws and regulations . There is quite an amount of legistlation regarding the duties and care of contractors on sites. There is also called the Construction Design and Management Regulations (CDM) to overcome problems with construction activity.There are statutory duties on clients designers and contractors to enforce laws which must be adhered to on any construction site. Research these websites and hopefully you can make a comprehensive and informative file regarding what should be included in this particular safety file.

On-site emergency procedures.
On-site safety procedures.
Safe ingress and egress routes and assembly points.
Contacts for key practitioners.
Contacts for key facilities controllers internal and external.
Safety program, assessments, inspections and updates.
Communication equipment, tracking, calibration and tests.
Certification requirements, critical criteria and issue.
Authorisation procedures.
Registration of personnel, vehicles, hazardous equipment.

Check with the Health and Safety Executive to fulfil all legal requirements.
