What are those people called who draw the suspects for the police?

You know how a witness gives the police a description, then the police tell the artist and they draw up the people?
Oh bugger, they are being replaced by computers now, arent they? Poo. I was hoping to get in that line of work.
Im an artist and want to do something with policing...Anyone got any other suggestions?

the computer is only the medium used to obtain a sketch....police graphic artist is the job title

Composite sketch artists, maybe?

Some Police Forces may have Public Relation departments.

They may need good photographers for their PR department.

Some newspapers and/or TV stations have staff that come into contact with the police often.

Other than that, "art" and "police work" don't cross paths that often.

The reason they were replaced is that when you bring a person into the equation (the artist) you introduces biases which may not accurately reflect the reality.

For example, if the witness said "African-American" some artists may introduce "stereotypical" features like bigger, flappier lips. It may not even be a intentional form of racism, just a form of inherent bias.

A professional--someone who is trained in the field--is a forensic sketch artist. Smaller jurisdictions may hire a non-forensic sketch artist as well.

If you're looking for something else, you could always try the courtroom artist. For when the media is not allowed. Check out their website.

Different areas call it different things. Here's one place that trains you:
