How do I check if a person went to court?

Someone I used to work with was arrested (thankfully) for child porn last year. How would I go about finding out if he was convicted or his trial date? I've googled, etc. and can't find anything other than the initial arrest information.

Do I need to go to the county records to find out? I don't want to use a pay site for background checks. I would also like to know if having child porn on a computer is a federal, state, or local jurisdiction.
