You can apply for a patent online or download the relevant documetns and send by post (see http://www.ipo.gov.uk/patent/p-applying/...
You should provide a full description of your invention [describe what you computer program is, what it contains and what it is about], use any diagrams if necessary, and must also include your claims and abstract- further details of each area is on the website.

first of all cover yourself and post the idea to yourself.
this way you are covered by the post mark that this idea was yours from yhat date.
obviously do not open the letter, just keep it safe then you have proof that this was your idea from that date
