Whats the law on breaks from computers??

With the impending smoking ban in 3 days my employer has banned all smoking breaks? The building owners have turned the whole premisis including the car park into a no smoking zone! so my MD has said that we cant leave the premisis for smoking only at Lunch? is this against the law i work infront of a computer all day this cant be right.

Check out the Health and Safety at Work VDU Act (1992). If memory serves it recommends breaks after 40-45mins.

Get a better job.

A big YES to that one I am pleased to say. Smoking is soo bad for you anyway so give up and you will be happy, not smell and have more $$ in the bank. As far as breaks from your computer are concerned you have to stand, stretch and look away every 20 minutes. I have just done a module on this in a course.

There are laws against it.

Working with computers requires a 10min break after each hour of continuous work.

A 15min break is required for every 4hrs of work, regardless of activity.

I'm sure these are right, best check them tho. Goolge should find the answers.

The most your employer can do is restrict your breaks to 1 in the morning, dinner and then 1 in the afternoon (based on a 9-5 shift)

simply down loading

Typically you get 15 minutes for every 4 hours i believe. But if your company says "no Smoking on the property your out of luck because they can prevent you from leaving until lunch time.

This link gives a summary and refers you to the various enactments on the subject (UK). http://www.icthubknowledgebase.org.uk/he...
