Want to start fixing computers as a freelancer, how does that work tax and insurancewise? Thanks?

I am skilled with computers and want to advertise myself in a local newspaper as a computer repairman and want to know how this works tax insurance wise, also declaring my income etc

Basically what do I have to do to keep myself on the right side of the law if I work as a self employed PC repairman?

Im 18 years old if this helps

Thankyou :)

Just to add I live in Northern Ireland, UK

Thanks again :)

You'll be technically referred to as a 'sole trader' - that is, unlike a limited company (which is a legally seperate entity to yourself), you would be operating under a business name for purposes of conducting your trade.

The tax stuff is pretty easy to set up - just get an accountant. It's worth paying for a good one because they'll save you more money than they cost.

You would likely be an independant contractor responsible for paying all your own taxes at the end of the year and providing your own insurance for mistakes you might make or damage you might dp, as well as any personal insurance you might want.

Hi...

The previous answer may be correct...it is cheaper to replace a PC than repair one.

However, if you are really good, then you can get into repairing systems. This means repairing networks for offices or major networking systems. But even this may be be difficult, since they usually have "in-house" people who make repairs and monitor their systems.

Now, you can also get into data retrieval, which is a highly speicalized field, but you can explore that on your own.

Get a job a Geek.com or see if a majoe company needsan "in house" network monitor etc.

Finally, if your good with Macs, get a job at a mac store...dude, you will meet the hottest, geeky girls ever!

Good luck.

As for the taxes...don't be silly. You make your taxes as self employed. Walk into an accountants office, tell him or her how much you want to claim you made, bring all receipts for your deductions, and bam...you just did your taxes.

First off congratulations on being an entrepreneur!

Most States do not collect sales tax on labor. But all States collect sales tax on parts and purchase of software license. Go on-line to your State government and get a resellers permit from them. The funny part is that although your required to collect sales tax you can't do it without a permit.

You'll want to keep a separate bank account for all the sales tax you collect. As it is not your money and the States can get very ugly if you collect it and then spend it.

With regard to insurance you would be wise to get a liability policy as you will have accidents and you won't want to be on the hook for any damages.

Good Luck

I actually own a repair company, and i'll tell you that the startup is fairly easy from a legal standpoint.

Computer repair is not regulated in any state...so you don't need training or certification to get an occupational license.

First come up with a good name...nothing tacky...like "pc doc". Make it sound professional.
You will need to register a ficticious name in your state. Then you will need to take that confirmed registration information that you will recieve in the mail to your local tax collector's office. You will fill out an occupational license application, pay about 20 bucks, and they will give you a what to/what not to do pamplet for running a business based out of your home. You will probably have to fill out a Tax-valorum application as well which allows you to collect tax for goods and services you provide....this may be in the same place depending on your local taxing authority standard practices. You will also need to get a tax payment coupon booklet.....ask your tax collector where to get it, so that you can pay and remit tax. You should setup a business checking account and deposit all payments into this account, and NEVER into your own personal account. It will make for a tracking nightmare if you don't. Insurance is usualy not required, but if your doing over 20k per year worth of business, it's a more professional practice to be bonded...at least up to 25k (in case you break expensive equipment on accident). This gives would-be customers a sense of assurance. Being that you are the sole proprietor, you will file the appropriate forms during tax time that show your business as standard income. Make sure you use a tax service like HR block....don't try to file on your own as a new/small business owner. Trust me !.

Now your all set. Feel out the market, and find your market niche....the parameters of your abilities. Then market and advertise yourself within those parametes, to provide the right customer expectation. Always give a detailed quote to your customers before starting any work. Get some accounting software as well...like quickbooks pro...good support, and user friendly.

go make some money !

good luck.
