Is it possible to take the United States Postal Service to small claims court?

I mailed a computer tower from Tx to Australia and it has not arrived , I mailed it on the 7th of May , well over a month ago , I insured it for 900.00 dollars , I mailed it air mail priority , 6 to 10 days it was supposed to be here , My mother did a inquiry and they sent a letter back saying they were only liable for 44.00 dollars , what should we do?

Contact the Postmaster in the city the tower was mailed from. Ask them for all information they have on the package. Do not assume they still have the package, but do hold them responsible.

It could be tied up somewhere beyond the U.S. Postal Service's control; Australian Customs for instance.

At any rate, try just talking to the Postmaster. Explain that you have not received the package, but it was insured. Tell them you would rather have the package in good condition rather than having to buy a new computer with the insurance money. Keep it as friendly as possible. People, even government employees, prefer doing jobs for nice people.

Do you have the insurance information? If you do then they owe you what it was insured for.

Sure, but you are wasting your time and money for court fees.

Probably not much you can do. You can always ask a lawyer.

You must find the insurance information. If it is insured for $900, the Postal Service is definitely liable for $900.

Good luck but I think you'll be wasting your time.

You paid for $900.00 of insurance and you are owed $900.00. I hope you kept all your receipts. If you did, they cannot bilk you out of the money. Take your receipts to the post office where you mailed the package from and make a claim. If you have to, talk with the Post Master.

sure you can take them to court, in this day and age anyone can be taken to court.

dont be fooled by the name UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE. They are not run by the Government, they are a privately owned corp. find your info and present it to them and ask them to explain it in detail as to why they arent held responsible for this. GOOD LUCK !!!

you actually have to have permission from the government to sue the government.

did you read the fine print? was it REALLY insured for 900 or do they have limited liability?

look for your receipt and take it up with a supervisor @ the post office

Customs has the rights to hold things for up to 90 days, that may be a place to check. also you will need the original receipt stating that the parcel was insured for that set amount (you should have paid a premium on shipping) otherwise the parcel is only insured for a cubed weight standard set by the post,

You cannot sue them, when you agree to ship with USPS you agree to their terms, the mere process of shipping engages you in a contract with them.
