How do you get a petty debt agency off your back

This debt collection place called NCO financial is calling me at work for a debt that amounts to less than three hundred dollars. When I called them back to make payment arrangements they were like rude children and would not proceed anywhere unless I gave them personal information ike my SS number or another phone number. I gave them my name and home state but nothing else. When they would not get the personal info they wanted they hung up on me. How do I take care of this without giving them my personal information? I want to pay the debt but I do not want them to have anymore personal info, it seems as if they almost don't want to resolve the issue.

I checked on line and these NCO people seems very sleazy and tricky.

report them to the ftc they could be viloting the fair debt collection act...that said tell them to send you proof that you owe the bill and deal with the original owner of the debt

You are missing the point. The company NEEDS your personal info to apply the payments correctly. Do you just want them to guess, and apply the payment to any John Doe that lives in your state? They have your info already, they need to verify who you are to make payment. There are new regulations that went into effect regarding customer privacy, and verifying info to process certain transactions for people, in December of 2007.

You know the debt is yours, so just pay it. Don't make a federal case of it.

The best option for debt trouble is negotiating your debts with your credit companies to keep the payments from swallowing all of your income. Typically, you have to get a counseling agency to call on your behalf. If you try to work with them yourself, many of them will not cooperate with you because you are not enrolled in credit counseling. Try http://www.womenindebt.info. Good luck!

Get your cheque book, write out the cheque for $300. Write a letter saying what it's for, your name, address and that the payment is "Full and final settlement".

Send it by recorded post (or any method of posting which requires the receiver to sign for the package, so you can check they have it).

Done.

NCO is awful.
Tell them to stop calling.
Some States do not allow calls at work.
Pay them is the best way.
They kept calling my house tell my wife told them off.
Problem: I am not the race of the person who owed!
Some how which I am happy about, they knew the race of the person they where after.
After you tell them to stop calling, they must.

Ether get a hold of the state Attorney Generals office by calling -writing -or email. Sometimes the District Attorneys office .
Provide the Attorney generals office with all the documents and tell them what has been happening. This collection agency is breaking the law.

Speedial all their numbers onto your phone, don't answer the call and if for any reason you pick up the phone ask them to produce your inital conract that you signed.

Pay them off. THey are debt collectors. For the most part, their jobs are to get money from people who make a career out of NOT paying bills (Present conpany excepted of course).

Order your credit report online, which is free,

https://ssl.myhostcenter.com/www.romanfi... Once you recieve your credit report, NCO's address information will be on it.

Write a letter telling them to not to contact you. Below, is a sample letter that you can send to them. Send it Certified Return Reciept.

you should check with citizens advice what information they are entitled to, but make sure you don't leave windows open which can be used to enter your premises as they are allowed to enter without damaging anything as long as a way in is there in some places, but I wouldn't give information out to anyone who I felt didn't need or were entitled to the information.
If I were you write them a letter and send it recorded delivery stating that you are willing to pay the debt but are unwilling to part with personal information as this could be used in ways you do not consent to, if they have a problem with this and continue to harass you for the information which is not required to pay off the debt seek legal advice (I would find out the legal possition for this first so you can explain any legal action you can (if any) take)
