Lower library bill by donating books?

qbpl.org Queens Borough Public Library. I have about $31 outstanding. I am willing to donate books (valued at ~200->300) to fulfill this debt. you think that I can or will they not accept it and demand the $31. Also I have a problem I gave a book to the library (borrowed) and they claim that it has been damaged and charged me $25 or the $31. for that. I want to dispute this how will i be able to do so> thanks. They send a letter to my home saying that they contacted me several times and that they will send it to collections. I never recieved a letter in the first place. the collection letter is the first letter i recieved!!!. thanks for the help.

Many public libraries will not accept book donations in place of fines. The books you are donating may not be needed and/or able to be used by the library. Something that is fine for the home collection may not be in good enough condition to circulate out to the public. In addition, fines go to another part of the budget, so it doesn't just "even out" as you imply.

What you can do is try to sell your books to a used bookstore and get the $31 that way to pay off your fees. I also see that if you are under 17, you can participate in the Read Down Your Fees program. Call your local library to research that more.

If you want to dispute the damaged book, the first thing to do is contact the library. Here's the number for Central Circulation: 718-990-0771. I suggest you explain that it wasn't damaged when you checked it out, and see if they can give you a break on the fine. They may be willing to meet you partway so long as you are polite and willing to meet THEM partway. Good Luck!

umm, well if your $31 dollar charge is from over due books, i'd just suggest to pay it.. you can always see what they say about dontating those books you spoke of.. but most libraries do have strict policies, i've been told many times that it's my own responsibility to return borrowed items on time, and pay the fee if i dont.. and i think everyone can understand the charge for damaged items.. "if you break it, -you bought it."

^__^ but if they're trying to charge you for damage that was already there when you got it.. i'm not sure what you should do about that.. sorry. it sucks having to give up yer hard earned money ^__^ but it's only fair if you break the rules, you have to expect and take the consequences..
