Is this legal? re:hospital bill?

I had a bill for my son's surgery with a hospital in MA, that for some unknown reason, the insurance company hadn't paid. (They realeased the funds today) I assumed it was paid since I hadn't heard from the hospital. W have since moved to another state, but we did have our mail forwarded.
My brother-in-law recieved a demand notice Monday, in OHIO, stating they were going to send it to collections in HIS name.
We did not give any other contacts, except ourselves, to the hospital.
1st ?- How would they get his info, and how would they know we're related?
2nd?- Could they have legally done this to my in-laws?
Funny thing is- This bro-in-law is the last person to EVER have any money...there were wwwaaaayyy better choices lol

1st are you sure you didnt use him for contact or referance on this bill? Iwould think as long as his signature is no where on he could not be liable

2nd Ido not believe this is legal. the worst part is its probably going to cost you money to find out

Your brother in law is under no legal obligation to pay this bill.
