I have a question regarding collection calls?

I was told by a friend that if a bill collector calls you from outside of the state that you live in to collect on a debt that is against the law for them to do that. Has anyone heard this before? Just wondering if this is true or not?

Assuming you're in the US, not true.

However, they can't call you before 8am or after 9pm your local time. It doesn't matter what the time is where they are.

It all depends in which state you live in.
In my state what I know......
The can't call you before 8 Am or after 9 PM
IF you request that they don't call your job, they have to stop.
They can't claim or accuse you of something illegal....
They can't make contact with you more than twice a week. \
They can't discuss your issue with anyone but you

Many of these if you can prove they were done, you can have it dismissed in court..... I would contact a lawyer who could help. It's worth it.

Look up collections laws in your state, and I do not belive that it is illegal for them to contact you from another state, as long as they adhere to the laws in which you reside.

Under the"FEDERAL" - "Fair Debt Collection Practice Act" of l997 - any bill collector can call you from where ever BUT they can not call you BEFORE 8:00 AM and AFTER 9:00 PM - YOUR TIME! - otherwise they can be subject to up a fine of $1,000.00 for each violation!

And contrary to popular belief - they can legally call you on Sundays and Holidays -

UNLESS any of the above provisions violate or are contrary to your State Law! - Which you may want to check!

Tell your friend to go back to school, that is not true.

The most important thing is that they cannot use harrasment or scare tactics. They cannot call at nights. They cannot call at your work place telephone.

Not true, but they are restricted to the time of day and the # of times per day they can call.
You have the right to say "Please put me on your do-not-call list, address your demands to me via US Mail."
They are then required to stop calling you completely.
If it's a legitimate debt, work out a payment program to get rid of it so it doesn't affect your credit rating.

Try the sites below, make sure to change your State/Location in which you reside. Hope this helps.
