If a creditor discharges a bill, can they then send it to a collection agency? |
I had or have a bill that the creditor discharged. Then I get a call from a collection agency saying that its turned over to them and I still owe it. Is that legal? The statement from the creditor says balance due 0.00. Yes, it is legal, but you dont have to pay it. This is a ploy done by some collection agencies. They purposely get these settled debts and write off debts with the proviso that they will get a bigger cut if they can get a person to pay the bill or any part thereof. If they call back, you can tell them the debt was discharged and you are officially notifying them that any further calls will constitute harrassment. They wont call back after that. Best of luck and I hope you can find this useful Yes they can. All that means is that you no longer owe the company but the collection agency. Many people think a bad debt "falls off" your credit report affter 7 years, but debts can be sold and re-sold potentially keeping them on your credit file forever. |
