How do I deal with a collection agency that is threatning law suits against me? |
I called to take care of a debt on my credit repot, the ydo not know what is for, did not want to negociate on amount and since then get letters saying pay or else. I'm trying to pay but have no idea what this debt is! HELP! Why pay? Demand to see you original contract. Collection agencies are crooks. They tried to get me to pay for a distance relatives bill and I said no. After 3 calls I warned them I would send them a bill for my time. The calls stopped. Here is what I did.....when they call, trace the number. then google it. Then get in your car and drive to the building....if its within a reasonable distance... act stupid and narrow down the person you talked to on the phone. Then you can use your imagination. Dont ever negotiate with them ever. wait a while then settle........tell them "take it or leave it asssholes" never pay what you owe.........and always request an itemized bill. listing what they say you owe for. First of all you need to contact whomever it is in writing that you want a copy of the judgement against you and a copy of the address of the original creditor. There are scams out there that once they get your address they make fake looking statements and fake collection agency letterheads and ask for payment. Some people actually send these people money. Never make payment unless you know for sure you in fact owe it. On a real collection agency bill it will state the original creditor, the amount owed, a phone number, and an address. Investigate first is all I can say. If you do owe this bill, then this company can take action. They can pass a judgement on you and if you own your home put a lean on it or garnish your wages. It is best to communicate with your creditors rather than ignore them. You should become familiar with your rights and protections under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/cred... dispute it with the credit bureau!!!! if they can not prove you owe them money, they have to remove it from your report. they CAN NOT SUE YOU IF THEY DON"T KNOW WHAT YOU OWE THEM FOR!!!! i worked for a mortgage company and learned how to repair credit that way. I am pretty good at it. I brought my husbands from the 400's to the 700's. i need to go. I'll check back tomorrow and offer more help if you need it. Tell them you are on the donot call list and get on it Just ignore them. Don't answer any phone calls, don't respond to any written letter from them. |
