Help Plz!! My son's father wants to sign his rights over and....?

Help Plz!! My son's father wants to sign his rights over and I am in agreement with that. He has had nothing to do with him for 8 years (my son is 9) and when he did have something to do with him that first year it was for less than a month. He does have child support and I know that he will still owe the back support & that is fine with him, but we want to get this over with. I am engaged but not married yet. I need the stipulations for him being able to sign his rights over w/o me being married to someone else right now. Any websites or advice would be appreciated. By the way, I had a civil protection order on him for a very short time (he was abusive and harrassed me to no end - violent threats toward me and my son). Now we need to have his parental rights terminated as we both wish him to.

he can sign the rights away without you being married- he signs the rights away to you pretty much. Normally people do it in the first week of the child's birth, but if he already signed the birth certificate, which I'm assuming he did, then you'll need to get ahold of a child protection services rep and see what paperwork you'll need done so he can sign the rights away and the rights be solely yours.

I probably won't answer this the way you want me to, but I will give you the best advice I can.

You do not want to mess this up. Your child's future is at stake. You need an attorney. There should be a referral service in your area that can refer you to an attorney that can do this withing your income level. They will refer you to an attorney that will do your initial meeting for free.

PLEASE contact an attorney!
