I have been let go as a Hebrew teacher because I am married to a muslim? |
Can I file a suit with the office for discrimination for civil rights violation or because this is not a federally funded program I cannot? What recourse do I have? I could care less if I win or lose I just want to stir the pot and let them get bad publicity. Should I call the ADL? There is an exception in the Civil Rights Act for religious institutions. Catholic schools can hire only Catholics in good standing if they so choose.. LDS can do the same. Hebrew schools can select their teachers based on thier own rules of conduct. (bonafide job requirement) You still have the right to marry who you like. Unless there is something in your employment contract that expressly prohibits something along the lines of marrying a Muslim (although a good lawyer would argue that a contract mandating your marriage choice is illegal and unenforceable), you can't be fired for something like that. If I were you, I would call the ADL and the ACLU, as well as a good employment and civil rights lawyer. You would of course have to prove that was the reason firstly. Doubt they're going to admit it in a deposition,so what proof do you have? As a private school, you do not have a lot of options. Just make sure that it is documented why you were discharged. That will make it easier to get another teaching job. Too bad so sad for you isn't it? |
