I'm looking for a pro bono attorney who can help me sue a huge company in Portland, Oregon/civil rights!?

I am a single mother who used to think that being in a relationship/married was the way it should be, but I have totally changed that reasoning! My children and I are victims of domestic violence; also I believe that my civil rights have been violated! I am a good person who just wants to try and live a normal life, but everytime I turn around, it's something else. I haven't had a permanent job in years, I have no health/dental insurance and I desperately need help! I believe that no one will hire me because of the way that I look and that is WRONG! So I've been working different temp jobs for years; I have also been laid off from several companies-I'm sick of it! Please, someone help me!

not sure a lawyer is the answer; but you should have some luck here

I certainly don't intend to sound rude, but if you've been laid off from "several companies" and "different temp jobs for years," then is there any chance that the problem lies with you? Have you evaluated how you present yourself while at work? Do you complete assigned tasks in a timely manner? Do you "go the extra mile" by offering to do a little extra here and there? Do you dress appropriately for the workplace, or do you wear plunging necklines and mini skirts? Do you leave personal problems at home and start the day with a positive attitude, or are co-workers subjected to daily installments of your latest drama?

Sit back and take a long hard look at your track record, and if you still believe that you have grounds for a discrimination case, then get your local phone book. There should be a listing for a legal aid society, or the local chapter of the Bar Association. A call to either place should connect you with an attorney with a specialty in civil rights. Many attorneys are required to complete X number of community service hours per year, too--pro bono cases. Just be sure to write yourself some notes before you make the call so that you have a concise chronology of what happened and when. Be specific--dates, times, what exactly was said or done, etc.

Good luck!

If you have been laid off from several companies, then someone must have hired you in spite of the way you look.

But unless you are being discriminated against on the basis of race, religion, national origin or gender, you don't have much of a case. Generally, companies can decline to hire you based on how you look. That's not illegal discrimination.

There aren't a lot of lawyers that would take a shaky case against a "huge company", even if they were paid. A free lawyer is probably nonexistent.

The type of help you need may not be legal help, but job training assistance, educational assistance, etc.

But if you think you have a legal case, let your fingers do the walking through the yellow pages. You can also call the local bar association and request the names of good PAID civil rights attorneys. Maybe one of these will believe your case has merit and will cut you a deal on the legal fees.
