Employers looking at credit reports. Is this a civil rights violation?

Current law allows employers to view your personal credit report before they hire you and after you are employed.

It's just another legal loophole to avoid hiring citizens. Don't expect any help, it's all going to the 'hard working' illegal aliens. Their rights are more important than yours.

How can one pay their debts without a job? And why should potential janitors have their credit checked to mop floors? I understand if it has some bearing on the job you are applying for. I can't imagine what situation would call for that, though.

gomanyes: That is legal blackmail.

It's illegal for them to look without your permission. You need to sign that you give permission for them to check your credit so you can get the job.

Not a civil rights violation. You "elect" to have them look at your credit by virtue of asking them for a job. It's not just employers. Insurance companies do the same as well as landlords. All legally.

It's a matter of statistics that gives them probability of paying your bills and assessing your risk to them as a business entity.

It's how credit reporting agencies make money...it is not for free. So, not every job, landlord, insurance company will do it unless they determine the expense of getting the report benefits the business. But it makes sense from a large business perspective to minimize economic risks.

It's absolutely legal. Especially in high security jobs you can be denied being hired if you have bad credit.

Your credit score is a good indicator of your character.. If you do not pay back money to people you owe it to, it does say a lot.
