Marriage is a civil right?

Isn't it?

Then why is it denied to homosexuals?

The argument for marriage as a civil right is that . . . homosexuals are allowed to marry -- they're just not allowed to marry people of the same sex. The establishment of this. . . legal faux pas is in public policy -- but, more appropriately, religion and fear.

Is marriage a civil right? Absolutely.

Then how can we only give it to certain people? We don't -- ANYBODY (who is capable of entering contracts) can marry.

Why can't gays get married? Because marriage is a public-policy action to promote pro-creation, and two men don't make a baby.

Why can't gays REALLY get married? Because in every generation, there exists a "scape-goat" of sorts who acts as the load-bearer for the prejudice and discrimination of that generation. . . it was blacks, women . . . now Gays.

I, as a gay man, personally think it's a load of crap -- and as a paralegal, I would love to have the opportunity to work on the Supreme Court case that challenges the state's rights to limit marriage to solely between heterosexual couples.

Yes. It is a right that is bestowed by the state. That makes it a civil right.

Homosexuality is a choice.

No....

Civil rights apply to all citizens without restrictions.

A civil right is an enforceable right or privilege, which if interfered with by another gives rise to an action for injury. Examples of civil rights are freedom of speech, press, and assembly; the right to vote; freedom from involuntary servitude

At least look up the definition of "civil right" before you comment on it.

{edit} No, marriage is a legal covenant between a state and a couple. Nothing more.

And by your own definition, if marriage between same sex couples is not allowed by law, then it is not a civil right.

For example, African Americans in the sixties fought for their civil rights because under law, they had none. Get it?

My thoughts exactly!

Same sex marriage isn't asking for special rights, but rather- EQUAL rights.

As a single man. Am I being denied my civil rights?

Sorry but I think marriage was a religious rite before the state began officiate marriage I believe it was designed as a rite between men and women, which is different to same sex relationships. You can in the UK have civil partnerships which in all legal terms are the same as being married but cannot be called married as that rite is reserved for mixed sex couples as has been the tradition.
In term of a religious act same sex marriage cannot happen as the Bible forbids it, so for a vicar/priest to sanctify a same sex marriage goes against the very teachings of the Bible. If the Church of England is accepted as the religion of the state, the the state cannot permit same sex couples to marry in the same way as mixed sex couple.
In the end its only a word..

I agree with the Sprout - marriage was a religious function that the State recognised - it is intended to protect the union between man and woman and the resulting off-spring. It is a recognition of what is correct in the eyes of God. It is not about the State recognising what is offensive to many people. Many people still believe that homosexuality is quite wrong, and that the State should not sanctify it, nor recognise it as a legitimate union. Gay people have the right to be gay, but should not look for further blessing from official bodies.

Marriage is a ceremonial things. We do have civil partnerships which give the same rights as a marriage without the religious overtones. I think that the existance of civil partnership answers all questions of discrimination.

In the UK people are trying to get the right of partnership for heterosexual couples who have moral objections to getting married.
