Odd for FBI to have warnings on film about Black Panther Fred?

The FBI has a warning on a film with the title The Murder Of Fred Hampton that any unauthorized reproduction of this film will result in severe civil and criminal penalties. There are two copyrights one 1971 and one 2007 on the boxright below the warning. Is it an infringement on civil rights to tell people they cannot reproduce a film about The Civil Rights Movement. Is it crass to say you own the rights to a person's murder. When a film is about Civil Rights people should be able to reproduce it in any form they like isn't it an infringement of Civil Rights to say otherwise

to be clear not saying FBI placed it just asking how does it look.Is it ethical to say you have the rights to a story of someone involved in civil right to make money of the murder of someone involved in civil rights no matter what law was on the books isn't it still laying claim to a perso n's life saying by extent you own a portion of their life. Is it laying claim to a blackman in a way to people own the rights to make money off this. doesn't it cheapen what was bein attempted to sell this for money..People should not own the rights to lives of people as they are notthe intellectual property of the peoplet hat want to use them was what was asked

Not at all.

Assuming it was made after the US signed the Bourne convention on intellectual property, then the people who made the film have an automatic copyright on the movie, and they get to say under what terms the thing can be copied and exhibited.

They do NOT own the rights to Mr Hamptons murder, but they DO own the rights to the film THEY made about it.

There is nothing stopping you from making your own film about the same subject and putting it into the public domain (or licensing it under whatever terms you like).

But to actually to force the makers of this film to give up their rights just because the film is about something you care about WOULD infringe their rights.

Regards, Dan.

The warning was not put on by the FBI. The warning is put on by the movie company. The FBI is mentioned only in the context that if you violate the rights of the movie copying by selling copies of the movie without giving the movie company their cut of the proceeds, they will ask the FBI to investigate.
