Why is the West Virginia torture case considered a hate crime and the Jena Six isn't? Double standard?

The civil rights people want the W. Virgina case to be tried as a hate crime but they want the Jena Six to be freed? Where is the logic and the justice? Why don't the civil rights leaders stick up for the kid who was beat up by six people? I guess it's OK as long as you're black to expect to get away with crime...That is just sad, and it is reverse racism at its best

Slavery was was over 150 years ago; so why am I to blame for it, I wasn't even there. Besides, if you argue that, I can counter that my great grand father fought and died for the North to free slaves; so if America was built on the back of the slave, then the slaves freedom was won by my relatives blood. But I guess that doesn't count...Besides, that would be like me saying that your relative killed my relative 150 yrs ago, so I expect you to pay for it? Like that's logical...

Better watch it, there are some professors in Indiana that say there is no such thing as a black racist and they can't exist. I don't believe this by any shape or form. They can be even more racist in certain cases.

That's the problem with labeling certain crimes "hate crimes" and certain speech "hate speech".

I live not too far from this area of the black, but am not familiar with the Jenna Six case. According to the local newspaper and a news report done with the girls mother apparently the girl is a little "off" and right now I don't think they are going to use the hate crime thing because using the other individual charges they can be given much more time.

You neglected to tell the part that the white boys started with the black boys. They jumped them first, and Hanging nooses up on a tree, that's really cute and childish!!!! Why don't you and 5 of your friends go and beat up a black boy and see what happens? you'll be walking around bragging to your friends not sitting in jail somewhere praying to get out and go to college. Because people with attitudes like that country hick are the type of people who beat and raped that little girl and made her eat rat and dog poop and drink out of the toilet and slice thru her skin and pulled her hair out. That guy was taunting those black kids and calling them nigg3rs after all the racial crap they had already been dealing with. He deserved to get his head knocked in. I think it is important for someone to point out that the outrage of the black community stems from the UNequal application of law by the District Attorney. If the six black students had been treated by the authorities with the same measure of law as the white students, there would be no outrage. But to punish only the blacks, repeatedly is obvious misuse of law, unfair, unethical, and unamerican.

Prior to the six on one fight, there were several incidents [crimes] committed by white students against black students and either NO charges were filed or only after some pressure one one student was charges with a misdemeanor. In that incident multiple people jumped a black student. But only one charged with a simple battery misdemeanor?

It is then unfair to charge the six black students with 2nd degree attempted murder [for fighting], and other felonies that would impose severe jail sentences up to 20 years or more.

Even a racist intellect would have to see this as unequal application of the law and an injustice based on the color of one's skin.

My thought is.....to bring the scale of justice in balance here....why not charge the people who hung those nooses in the so called "white tree" with Second Degree Attempted Murder. What do nooses signify? Death by hanging.....

Six whites tortured one black woman for several days unprovoked. They had no reason to want to torture her. If you don't think that race came into play that allowed them to dehumanize this black woman, than you lack of critical thinking skills. Sadly you truly believe that black people in America after 200 plus years of slavery and a 100 plus years of fighting to sit at the same lunch counter, and have the same rights and liberties as whites in the U.S now receive special treatment you ignorant to the things that have and still go on in America. Black people are not upset because these boys were brought up on criminal charges they are upset because of the unequal treatment. A black boy was beaten up earlier in the town, and no one faced charges. Three blacks had a gun pulled on them at a gas station and took the gun from the white person to save their lives and were charged with theft of a firearm. The school was set on fire shortly after the white boys were suspended for hanging nooses, yet no one is investigating. Tell me where the preferential treatment is in this situation, and tell me where race did not come to play. And what the hell is reverse racism...? People get jumped all the time... sometimes there are charges filed sometimes there are not. It was a high school fight and should have been handled as such. Do white people really believe America is their country? America obtained its wealth on the backs of African Slaves... they killed native american's for the land... and though no white people can claim american ancestry it seems some really believe its their country. I mean black people didn't asked to be brought here, native americans sure as hell didn't ask white people to come here. So why get upset when another ethnicity is demanding equal treatment. and ethnicity of people just as American as any white person here, if not more because for most blacks in America, America is the furthest they can accuratley trace back their ancestry
