Is it legal to teach children the law in school if there is religious conflict?

Some Muslim women tell you that they are not forced to wear the hajib (head covering). This is not about them. This is a question about educating children to know their legal rights by teaching tolerance, what their rights are and how to report parents or others who violate them .

Is it against the law to teach children in public school that it is a gross violation of their civil rights to be be forced, coerced or pressured into wearing the hajib against their will?

In the United States of America

It is EXTREMELY important that kids be taught in school what their legal rights are - especially if those rights conflict with their parents religious beliefs.

There was very recently a case in Canada where a teenage girl was murdered by her own father for not wearing the Hijab to school. She had already been beaten by him several times when he had discovered that she'd removed her hijab after leaving the house.

She was never taught at school that she had the right to go to CPS and have them investigate the beatings she was getting. If the school had been more concerned about preparing a student for the real world, and less about offending her parents, she might be alive today.

You don't mention which country...

However, that's a really tricky issue. Is equal emphasis given to teaching children that they don't have to obey other teachings of their religions and cultures and families? Or just the ones you disagree with?

Since most who wear the hajib choose to wear it even if at a very young age, what would be the benefit to teach something that is of no value to them? If you can teach the lesson in a way where it would benefit the entire class without mentioning the hajibs, then you would have every right to do so, otherwise you will be singling out a class of people and violating their right for expression. In other words if not states carefully, you could end up the one on the wrong side of the law.

It is contrary to their rights to have the government force them to dress in a certan way. When one enters into a voluntary personal arrangement, such as marriage, and accedes to the wishes of the partner by wearing a hajib, or high heals or anything else, that is not a violation of civil rights. Nor do rights enter into parental control. Thus my son's rights are not violated when I prohibit him from getting his tongue pierced. So, teaching the law as a restriction on government is not contrary to the religious beliefs.
