Law question: discrimination against blacks, gays, men, women?

Some people compare limiting marriage to a man and a woman to banning interracial marriages, which virtually everyone agrees was illegal discrimination.

If that's true, then is allowing single-sex bathrooms, locker rooms, dorm rooms and barracks illegal segregation?

The law (and society) would treat someone refusing to bunk with someone of a different race VERY differently than someone refusing to bunk with someone of a different sex.

The law does not recognize differences between the races. But it clearly does declare that there are legally cognizable differences between men and women.

So, are we wrong to keep "sex-segregated" facilities, or is society right to recognize that men and women are legally equal but not identical or interchangeable?

I abhor racial discrimination, and have defended civil rights leaders against those who would criticize them here.

What are your thoughts?

Just to clarify, I fully agree that restrooms, etc. should be single-sex.

Maybe the better question would have been openly gay people serving in the military. If that is allowed, then people who are POTENTIALLY sexually interested in you would be bunking with you. So if that is not a threat to "unit cohesion," then why would co-ed barracks be? Is it "heterophobic" to think that men and women together can't control themselves?

Your sex is different than your race. Race is just a color. Your sex is your whole body. If everything was same sex then all the perverts, rapists, and child molesters of the world would have it a whole lot easier. How would you like your wife or duaghter going into a public bathroom and then seeing some guy walk in there checking her out. How would you like going into a public bathroom and having some woman follow you in there and start laughing at you. Would you feel the same about women if you heard and saw what they do in the restroom, especially during certain times? I mean think about it. Is that what you really want??

I would think that either a straight of the opposite or a gay of the same sex would both be awkward. If you know the person is gay then it would be really like the opposite sex. if you don't know then I guess it wouldn't bug you. Report It

I wouldn't mind sharing a dressing room with women. I would be in the swim wear department every saturday

Now think of the time and age we are living in.. And ask yourself this..

If you had a little girl, Would you want her in a same sex bathroom with say someone who could be a pedophile?

Or your wife in the a same sex locker room with a rapist?

I think there is some safety in having single sex areas. Plus I really don't want to walk my 3 year old daughter into a bathroom where a men is urinating in a urinal. There are just some things men and women need to do alone.

The guy above helped make my point. He wouldn't mind because it was in lust he thought. How do you suppose that would make a women feel comfortable to have men lusting over them while they changed..

The perversity of the American society is why things will not change. Think "Brent J. Brents". He got 1500 years and he wasn't nearly as insane as Ted Bundy.
