Can being called racist be considered slander/libel?

Especially recently, I noticed that the term "racist" gets thrown around like crazy, often without any provocation. I just read a post from a woman who talked about prosecuting those who hire illegals and she got called a racist 4 times. Is this slander/libel? She did not mention race once, she mentioned criminals. I'm tired of people using this whenever they feel they are losing an argument. Read about the Civil Rights Movement. Blacks being lynched or attacked by dogs, having their churches and houses burned, being denied work or the right to vote. Those are the actions of racists. Saying that the laws should be enforced is the act of a good citizen.

Are there any cases of someone suing for being called racist in public?

I definetely agree with you on this, but like most terms, people just use them without really knowing what they're talking about. As to the slander issue, i'm sure if the racist comment was harmful to the person in some way it could be considered slander (as long as their was no proof of actual racism).

I'm not sure if somebody has been sued over this, but they definitely should be. I agree that there is a difference between enforcing laws and racism. Good point.

Hey maybe you could be the first to sue. Why not black people or people of other ethnic backgrounds sue when they are not happy why not the white group. Call a lawyer I think more white people should start suing over the affirmative action and being called racist maybe someone will wake up and start helping us for a change. Oops what am I sayin this is the US they cant stand white people including themselves.

Can someone just demanding enforcing the laws be racist?
I think, yes. Catching runaway slaves and then whipping them half dead was 'just enforcing the laws'. Laws can be (and some are) racist, inhuman and idiotic. The lawmakers can be racists and can be elected to office by votes from fellow racists.
About suing : I am no lawyer but I suspect calling political opponents names has some protection under the first amendment.
