How could the US government take away the tax exempt status of the LDS church?

The LDS church never discriminated against any race, nor did we ever break any civil rights laws. So, how could anyone say that theh government could take away our tax exempt status?

They could easily do it because the church does not ordain women into their priestshood. The Catholics, too. But I don't see them making any moves along those lines. Or because of our stand on active homosexuals.

Read the history of your church.

While Blacks could be members - and be required to tithe, they could not hold any positions within the church hierarchy.

Same with Asians and Native Americans.

However, as far as I'm concerned, they should take away the tax exempt status from ALL churches. Over the last 40 years, the churches have become more and more involved in politics, business and public education and less involved in "ministering to the flock".

Perhaps required is too strong a word. One is EXPECTED to tithe to the church. Just as one is EXPECTED to volunteer for church activities, gather goods and keep a pantry filled at all times. Report It

It has been my experience that those who do not do what is EXPECTED are soon ignored. As for ethnic tolerance, read the following:

And, while Asians and Indians are tolerated - they are just barely. Read the following:

Time to convert

Later Day Saints?

How could the Gov't give tax exempt status to Scientology?

rEALLY ENE TO mORO SOU??

They did? Or are you asking if they could?
I dont think they should be able to. Im not Mormon, but still it wouldnt be right to take away your exempt status and not other churches.

The only way I could see that the government could remove the tax exempt status is if the LDS turns a profit in any way.

Churches are tax exempt on many conditions, one of which is not for profit status. If they don't donate a certain portion of their proceeds, and not account for a profit at all, then they can keep their tax exempt status. But if it is ever found that a profit has been turned by a religious organization, it then at that point, becomes a business, and falls under the guidelines for business taxes.

Other than that, I have no clue as to why they would do that.

I have mormon aquaintances who tell me they vote a certain way because the church tells them to.

That in itself is against the law.

All churches should pay taxes like any other business.

When any church starts acting more like a business, with huge offices then it deserves to lose it's ax exempt status.

Every church should lose their tax exempt status, considering that they preach hate and judgment against everyone else who doesn't believe what they believe in total contradiction of what Jesus taught.
