Adoption Question.....?

How would you feel if the person that wanted to adopt your baby had a criminal record? It was for drug charges in 97 and they served 6 years (parole ends in 2009). They are clean now and own their business and make good money; have a house, truck..etc.

Now that I have a few answers, I will add more details.

The person I am speaking of is my husband; whom by the way is a great man. Just made stupid mistakes when he was younger. We have been married 8 years together 9 and can't have children of our own. I had a full hysteretomy May of 2005. We have a great marriage and he has come so far; I believe in him and he is great with our little cousins, whom spend the night quite often.

Contrary to popular beleif, people do change. For me, it would depend on the type of drug charges. For example, was it drug traffiking or did he/she just get caught with a personal stash. If it was the latter, I wouldn't have a problem, since people can successfully quit using drugs.

I don't think they could legally adopt with a record like that........

for what kind of drugs though? if it was just weed, or coke, then they are fine, but if it was like heroin or meth STEER THE HELL CLEAR. Everyone has made mistakes in thier life. Like i know parents to this day that were big coke heads before they had their kids and are str8 repsectable people now. And a lot of people smoke weed, weed does not dibilitate like people thinks it does. Just make them submit to a blood or even hair test to show their last use of it. Whcih could be pricey, but its worth it if your child is going to them. Dont get me wrong, i dont agree with drugs at all now, but ive seen personaly past mistakes people have made and the people they are today.

It's sad isn't it that what we do when we are young often come back to haunt us. If he is a felon I don't know if he could adopt unless it was private (not through an agency). Good luck though, I hope you get a baby.

There are a lot of people out there who want to adopt. I would try to find the best possible family to adopt my child. Sorry, but someone with a criminal record would not make the cut. I good adoption agency probably will not allow it either.
