Who to contact about adoption?

My fiance and I are going to be married soon and we would love for him to be able to adopt my daughter as soon as possible. I know I need to contact a lawyer, but I'm not sure which "kind" - is it Family Law? Thanks for your help!

Edited to add - My daughter is four years old - her bio father has made contact twice in her lifetime and the last time was over three years ago, he's not been in contact of any kind since.

Your yellow pages is full of lawyers. Call an adoption lawyer and get a price up front. It shouldn't be more than a few thousand, if that. I would get a few quotes before making a decision. An excellent place to get a referral is a local adoption agency or your county's children's services department. Adoptions like you describe are very simple compared to other adoptions. Your fiance may have to attend state mandated home study classes or jump through some other hoops. A lawyer can walk you through that.

You will need to contact your child's birth father and have him sign off. If you think this will be a problem, be prepared to go to court and spend more on the lawyer. Adoption laws vary by state so I can't tell you a whole bunch more. How old is your child? At a certain age the child will have a say in the adoption. Like I said, those are things that your lawyer can review with you. Good luck!

There are lawyers who specialize in adoption. Especially if the child's father is alive, this is what you need.

they are called adoption lawyers it should be in the yellow pages under adoption............i am an adopted child and have 2 adopted sisters i know what i am talking about. lol or look under attorneys and see who has adoption listed as a specialty
