Except for status changes (marriage, adoption, etc), can you change your name, for personal reasons, only once?

It depends on the laws of your state. Of course, if you want to change your name, you have to file a petition, pay the costs, run an ad in the newspaper so that anyone can contest the name change, and then you go to court. During your hearing, the judge will put you under oath, ask you some questions about your name, ask you if you are trying to defraud anyone (including creditors), then he will approve your petition, if the judge finds your petition to be valid. After that, you have to go through the process of notifying the Social Security Administration, getting a new driver's license, and notifying your creditors.

It doesn't depend on the laws of the state at all. Report It

I think you can change it as many times as you want. I believe a fee is involved each time you do it. You should check with you town offices to see what the fee is. It should be either the same or similar to changing it when a person gets married.

One guy changed his name to kentuckyfrieddeath.com, or something like that.

You can change your name as oftne as you want. If it is not due to marriage or adoption, you can simply begin using the new name, but to get a new SS card, you have to file for a name change in your local court and pay a fee for it.

I know a guy who changed his name to Mattress Fever...no kidding, we all now call him Matt.

You can do it as long as it isn't to defraud people. In other words, you can't change your name so you can keep the police from finding you after you commit a crime. You also can't change your name to Elizabeth Taylor as a way to try and fool people into thinking you are the movie star. Other than a few restrictions like that, you can change your name as often as you like.
