What is the deal with gay adoption? were is it legal?

if a gay couple travel to a state were its legal to adopt do they have to live there? and if so for how long?

wow thank you everyone for your Help with my question. I do live in florida so I guess I have a problem. wake up florida and set us free!!!!!

Ignorant responses like the one above are exactly the reason you should only reside in a progressive state. The country is unfortunately full of idiots like "upforit". Look at his pathetic first post:

"Where should I look for a potential wife. I am a single father of two.? I don't have a lot of time for dating.I am 35 5'8" tall 220 pounds and considered attractive by most women."

HHAHHAHAHA!!! 5'8" and 220 pounds? Attractive? *BWahahahhaa! Ugh. Maybe in Redneckville... but not in the real world fat ***.

I'd wager if given the choice, any child would prefer to live in ahome with two loving parents of the same sex, than in a trailer park with a fat, loathsome boor like him. I pity his kids.

There are national adoption agencies that network throughout the US for gay and hetero couples.

Within the U.S., Only California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Vermont, Washington state, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C. allow adoption by same-sex couples. You would need to maintain permanent residence in those states to protect your adoption rights. Adopting a child in New York and then moving to Florida for example, would not be a good idea.

I think not have kids is the price gays pay for their choices.I am firmly against gay adoption. The gay life style in itself is a perversion against nature. All children deserve a wholesome enviroment to be raised in.The gay lifestyle should not be socially accepted or potrayed as ok.I would define parents as a mother and a father. I think any homo should try something exciting like sky diving or playing in mine fields.

My understanding is that only in Florida can a second parent of the same sex NOT adopt a child with the other parent. Many states do not have laws one way or the other, but generally DO allow second-parent adoption by someone of the same sex. Some states have laws explicitly allowing people of the same sex to adopt - like Massachusetts and Vermont. But, in general, in every state except Florida, people of the same sex can adopt a child together.

The Human Rights Campaign has some very good state specific information on second parent adoption. Check there for more info. www.hrc.org

And, FYI, I am gay and I am about to be a parent. It is no longer true that being gay means you must be childless. Many, many gay couples are parents - and excellent ones at that.
