How do i do a step parent adoption without a lawyer?

My ex husband is one of those "dead beat dads" who doesnt pay child support, is in contempt of like 5 other things that are all involving our son who is 6. I live in Oklahoma and by the state law, i can file for my husband to adopt my son in the process it will terminate my ex's parental rights. i've maxed out all of my credit cards on previous lawyers and am totally broke. how do i go about filing for this adoption without an attorney?

Honestly, unless you have a legal background, you don't. The filing fees and required evaluations can be quite expensive. One small misstep, the case will be tossed, the Judge will tell you to hire an attorney and you will end up paying for everything all over again on top of the attorney fees. Call around, you may be able to find an attorney with a new practice or one that is just starting out whose fees can be substantially lower then more experienced attorneys. As long as the father is not contesting the adoption, a less experienced attorney can handle the case. You may also be able to find an attorney that will accept payments instead of one lump sum. A good place to start your search is your state bar association.

You know, I wish I could remember the website. But there is a site that you can go on and fill out which ever papers you need, you then pay them their nominal fee and they ship the papers properly done and ready to be filed at a local court. This attorney Dershewitz is the person behind the site.

Stop trying to make the other guy the Dad. You child has only one dad and you need to work on that situation. You chose to have a child with this loser so it's as much your fault as his.

the only way to do an adoption is to have a lawyer. I was adopted by my stepdad, and they had to go through a process with a lawyer and court hearings. It is expensive though.

It is very diffcult to do without a lawyer. Call the nearest law school and ask if they have a pro bono program. If so, perhaps they will take your case.

DON'T DO IT!

The lawyers fee is worth preventing any heartache you may experience by doing it wrong!

Good Luck!
