Do I owe child support if I put my child up for adoption? |
Do I owe child support if I put my child up for adoption? It depends, if they were in the foster system first, then you do that money back. But if you gave birth then put the baby up for adoption right away you will not. adoption no!! are you going to do that? i wish i could adopt good luck The minute you turn your child over for adoption, your expenses for that child end. If you owed anything before that time, then yes, you are still responsible for those expenses. After you've settled all payables, once your child is adopted, you relinquish support to the adoptive parents. But while your child is still up for adoption you still have to support the child. once the adoption has occurred then you have no parental rights or responsibilities so no you would not be responsible for child support Child support laws differ from state to state. In some states it would depend on the conditions of the adoption (i.e. are you putting your child up for adoption due to state intervention?). This should be a question that your local child support office can answer for you. If not, you should be able to do some research on this yourself at the local library. Also, probably not a bad idea to consult a private attorney. This is a question that I would think they could answer at no or low cost. It depends if your parental rights are terminated. If the child is adopted you are no longer legally responsible for the child support, however, you will still have to pay any arrears up to the date of the adoption. Why would you want to give up you own flesh and blood that varies from state to state and situation to situation. try contacting an adoption agency and ask for counseling including legal counseling on child support. counseling is free regardless of what decision you make about your child |
