Pro-Choicers: Why the high moral horses about *personal* opposition to abortion? |
Pro-choicers will say that they themselves would never get an abortion and/or would counsel loved ones to go with adoption or keep the baby. This is expressed too by many who post here in defense of choice - as if being PERSONALLY opposed even while legally supportive of choice is somehow morally superior to being undisturbed outright by abortion. Who the he** cares if we'd have an abortion or not?? This seems contradictory or hypocritical to the anti-abortion types, but think of it this way: There's NO WAY to prevent abortion from happening, no matter how many laws you pass. Let's face it. The short answer is that abortion is ugly. No one wants to encourage a friend to have one. I was extremely pro life up until the age of 19. I never thought I'd have children at the time. Having an unplanned pregnancy made me understand the thought process that so many women have in that crisis. Although I don't like the idea of it, I am not going to pass judgement on anyone who chooses to do so. Yes, I kept my child and never regretted it a single day. Abortion was the harder of 3 choices I could have made, and I chose to have him. This doesn't make me better than anyone else, or stronger than anyone else. You have to walk a day in someone elses shoes to see the big picture sometimes. And "all women who don't want to have children should keep their legs closed" is not a realistic option. Certain precautions should certainly be taken, but it is not a perfect world and we are far from perfect people. You, as do so many, oversimplify. I, personally am opposed to abortion. However, I am even more opposed to having a government entity tell women what they can and cannot do with their bodies. I do not believe the answer to this problem is in further legislation. I believe it is in education and family and community support. Even then there would always be some cases where abortion might indeed be the only option. |
