A third in my series of political questions, gay marraige?

so i dont see why gay marraige has to be a religious issue. i dont see why religion should have anything to go with government at all, but thats another story. in america a marraige by law is simply a document giving you the rights of a couple. i believe you get tax breaks and adoption rights and certain property rights if you ever (heaven forbid) get a divorce. marraige by law is not the same as marriage defined in the bible. in the bible a main component is about having babies (way to make more kids who spread the religion). but also in the bible its about love. even if you dont believe that gay people can be in love you should still support them having a marriage license in the united states because shouldnt everyone have equal rights? im not sure if thats in the bible or not.
they should just call it CIVIL UNION more often.

omg i cant believe someone brought up the slippery slope issue. they could add a clause: two consenting adults. why should it be any different??

I'm all for Civil Unions.

Marriage should be about religion, but the civil benefits (mostly related to what happens when your partner dies) of marriage should be arranged for anyone who does not want a religious affiliation with their union.

I tried this question already once.. and only one person responded, which gives me the idea that either people didn't like my question, there are not very many people against gay marriages, or everyone that is against it is for religious reasons.. good luck though.. hope you had better luck than me in getting responses..

Everyone is thinking like it's all about 'me'. What ever happened to American morals. If this gets passed why should he have to wait to marry her and not just marry her while she is 14. Or why not marry your favorite dog. The line has to be somewhere. I believe in what the bible says and by following it I have faith I will go to heaven. That's why we make this a religious issue.

And yes most Americans are against this. Every poll has shown this and every state that has tried to legalize it has failed.

I think the federal government should stay the hell out. It should be up to each state and put to a vote. Get set for some pretty popular states to live in.

Gay marriage is a religious issue because religious laws provide that only a man and woman could be married. It is also a political issue because candidates are trying to approve or disapprove gay marriages in order to get votes from the people.

You make a great point. It should just be called a Civil Union.

Religion is one of the worst things that have EVER happened to this world. Just about every war for the fast 4,000 years have in some way been caused by religious beliefs. In America the main religion is Christian. If you ever actually learn about the religion you'll learn it's not as bright and cheery as you think. I wont go into details about why religion sucks and all the bad it's casued this world.

I have two gay cousins and I believe that gay marriage should be legal and NEVER looked down on. The concept of being Gay has been around for thousands of years as well. Did you know that in the ancient civilization of Sparta their soldiers were actually encouraged to be gay.

I think you are 100% right. Legally all a marriage is, is a civil union. The relgious aspects have nothing to do with it. That is why I do not understand the objection of some relgious people--no one is suggesting that their chruch has to perform same sex marriages.

The fact is these relationships exists--whether some people like it or not. They have kids and have property. They should be recognized as some type of domestic or family relationship. I guess if people want to call them "civil unions" that is fine--we love to play word games these days--but that is all a "marriage" is civilly and legally.

The argument of the courts that the reason gay marriage can be prohitibed and does not violate the equal protection clause of the states' constituitions is not grounded in reality. They say the purpose of marriage is the procreation of children. The reality is that almost half of children are not born of unions with any type of government blessing. Second, a lot of gay unions do have children--whether they are adopted, step children of one partner, or the result of artificial insemnitation.
