Is this extortion? |
Subletting is allowed by my lease agreement. I found someone to sublet the apartment to and the landlord said there is a $200 administrative fee to sublet. This fee is nowhere in the lease. He kept changing exactly what this fee would cover. He would not let me sublet until I paid him this money. I had already found a new place and signed a lease there so i had to pay the money. Is this extortion? Ask an attorney. no; it's the price of doing business. If you want to change a leased apartment, there are fees if the landlord even agrees to let you; probably cheaper than paying for the balance of the lease wasn't it? You didn't have to pay it; you could have resolved your current lease terms before entering into a new lease. If the $200 administrative fee to sublease is not included in your lease contract, you can not be held liable for that. |
